The dark side of glamorous expat life in Paris is brought to life in this new translation.
Try to imagine a guest, a wealthy woman, staying at the Majestic with her husband, her son, a nurse and a governess...in a suite that costs more than a thousand francs a day.... At six in the morning, she's strangled, not in her room but in the basement locker room.... In all likelihood, that's where the crime was committed.... What was the woman doing in the basement? Who could have lured her down there, and how? Especially at an hour when people of that kind are usually still fast asleep.
This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret and the Hotel Majestic.
Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

"The Cellars of the Majestic," first published in 1942 as "Les caves du Majestic" and later translated as "Maigret and the Hotel Majestic," is one of Georges Simenon's finest police procedurals featuring Commissaire Jules Maigret of the Paris Police Judiciare. It features a large cast of memorable characters, almost all of modest means, and this makes the book a delightful read and two TV adaptations--the BBC series starring Michael Gambon and the French series with Bruno Cremer--simply outstanding. Action in this novel plays out primarily in the basement regions of a luxury hotel, where the murder of a female visitor occurs, but other locations add great piquancy to the story and focus on the demimondaine world of both Paris and Cannes. In one of Agatha Christie's mysteries the redoubtable detective Jane Marple noted that "old sins cast long shadows," and, in "The Cellars of the Majestic," Maigret and his inspectors solve a complex puzzle and provide a surprise ending by unearthing key secrets of the past.Product details

The Cellars of the Majestic Inspector Maigret Book 21 (Audible Audio Edition) Georges Simenon Howard Curtis translator Gareth Armstrong Audible Studios Books Reviews
Great Simenon story.
Great book. I have read all by this author. Love them
Although I had seen the movie before, to read it was still great.
Simenon is a real master.
I've read, and reread, the Maigret series for 30 years. Simenon is one of my tow or three favorite authors. Thank goodness he was a prolific writer.
another great book by simenon, I can hardly wait each month as a new story is translated from french to english. for plot, people you can get no better, and the stories are great. Love Maigret.
Simenon is always a good story, complex and full of an understanding of human nature. I find the new Penguin series less readable than other translations I have read, although they are probably more accurate to the originals.
Georges Simenon always writes very good low key stories. A good detective procedural. Inspector Maigret is an old-fashioned detective. Slow and steady until the guilty are caught.
